JAZZ - DAVID BENTLEY TRIO with special guest ELLY HOYT
Imperial Hotel Eumundi 8:00pm - 10:00pm
1 Etheridge St
Eumundi, Queensland, 4562
Sensational jazz vocalist Elly Hoyt features as the next Imperial Jazz Club special guest, performing at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 1 July. Elly will be accompanied by the David Bentley Trio (DB3).
Elly consistently captures audiences with her soulful seductive voice. From a very young age, she has had the ability to invoke the charge given to past greats and take it somewhere new.
She first paved her way into the Australian jazz scene when she won the prestigious Generation in Jazz vocal scholarship in 2008, judged by James Morrison.
James Morrison: “From the moment I first heard Elly sing, I knew she had that classic, indefinable thing that makes one a jazz singer. It's not just a sound, or a choice of notes but a way of approaching a song that lets the listener know - this is the real thing".
She toured Australia and released her debut self-titled album in late 2010 and was awarded Best Australian Jazz Vocal Album at the Australian Jazz Bell Awards in 2011. That very year a co-written tune, ‘All I Know’ was nominated for a Qmusic award for Best Jazz Composition.
In 2012, Elly was invited by the Premier of Tasmania to perform for Prince Charles and Camilla at the Royal Jubilee Reception. The next year she was nominated for a Freedman Jazz Fellowship, and was awarded an Australia Council Grant to study with internationally renowned vocalists Gretchen Parlato, Dominique Eade, Peter Eldridge (New York Voices), Anita Wardell, Anne Peckham and Jeannette Lovetri in New York City.
After returning to Australia, Elly released her second album Oranges & Sunshine in 2015. Elly was the recipient of the 2015 Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship and has recently returned after living in Boston, Massachusetts where she was studying a Masters of Jazz Performance at New England Conservatory of Music. Elly recently supported Kenny Barron for the Brisbane International Jazz Festival (BIJF) 2017.
She holds a Bachelor of Music in Jazz voice and Masters of Music Studies in Vocal Pedagogy from the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University where she currently lectures.
Nikos Fotakis - “Elly Hoyt takes no prisoners. Her voice, her singing, her phrasing, her presence – everything about her is so commanding and captivating, that one should feel sorry for the unsuspecting listener, who presses ‘play’, unable to imagine the emotional roller coaster about to unfold.” – Jazz Australia
In Eumundi, Elly shares the stage with Imperial Jazz Club resident group DB3 - David Bentley (piano), Andrew Shaw (acoustic bass) and Nathan Goldman (percussion).
