By Li Cunxin (Pronounced Lee Schwin Sing)

The Peasant Prince is a picture book version of Li’s internationally bestselling memoir, Mao's Last Dancer, which was made into a film in 2009.

This remarkable tale is one of the most inspiring stories to come from China in many years. Li Cunxin’s journey of courage and determination is simply told and is as powerful, fanciful and incredible as any fairytale.

The story traces the journey of a small boy from a very poor village in China during the era of Chairman Mao, who against all odds becomes one of the most famous ballet dancers in the world.

In 1995 he moved to Australia to become the principal artist for the Australian Ballet. He retired from dancing when he was 38, and in a major career change became a senior manager at one of Australia’s leading Stockbroking firms.

Li Cunxin now lives in Brisbane and is the Artistic Director of the Queensland Ballet.

The production will also appeal to adults who have read Li Cunxin’s autobiography Mao’s Last Dancer and have seen the hugely popular 2009 Australian film of the same name.

The Peasant Prince is a highly inspirational story with a difference, and celebrates diversity, determination, the strength and bond of families, as well as our multicultural society.
