Calling All Citizen Scientists to FIND A FROG IN FEBRUARY!

We are looking for individuals, families and groups from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Noosa, Gympie Fraser Coast council regions and the coastal river catchments from Peregian to Burrum Heads and Fraser Island (K’Gari) to get involved and ‘Find a Frog in February’  in the Mary River catchment.

The MaryRiver catchment is home to around 40 frog species, including the endangered Giant barred frog, one of the largest frogs in Australia, and the Cascade tree frog, a rainforest stream specialist.

This important scientific research project provides an opportunity for community members to collect data that will contribute to our understanding of how frogs are responding to changes in the environment.

Local “Frog Lady” – Eva Ford, Find A Frog Co-ordinator for The Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC), says

“Frogs are a vital component of our ecosystems and are easily affected by changes in the air, water and land.  The more we know about where frogs are the better we can manage their habitats.   This program encourages people to get outside, find frogs and contribute their findings to the Queensland Government’s WildNet database for the use of citizens, researchers and planners, ensuring our frogs have a better future”.

This year ‘Find a Frog in February’ aims for 1000 sightings but If it’s a good season for frog activity and our Citizen Scientists answer the call we can easily find more!

To learn how to become a Frogger, including species identification, frog hygiene and how to submit your findings, visit our website for all the details you will need to get involved, it’s where you can find helpful resources, including the Frog Finder’s Guide and the Data Sheet you will need to submit your findings.

‘Find a Frog in February’ on Facebook will keep you up to date and let you share your enthusiasm with other Citizen Scientists.
