MALENY WOOD EXPO CELEBRATES DIVERSITY OF AUSTRALIAN TIMBERS

See Maleny come alive as the mobile mills fire up and fresh sawdust flies at the 2014 Maleny Wood Expo.

The Expo showcases local rainforest timbers through the work of SEQ’s best woodworkers, while the beautiful rural setting and friendly volunteers ensure a safe and family-friendly day out in the Hinterland’s green hills.

With thousands of visitors set to converge on Maleny over the weekend, woodworkers are slabbing, cutting, joining, polishing and burnishing the myriad of pieces to go on show.

From fine furniture to bbq settings, there is an extraordinary range of furniture, sculptural pieces, artworks and everything else that can be fashioned from timber.

As Queensland's richest woodworking competition, The Wootha Prize “Open + Shut” exhibition has entrants vying for over $4,000 in prize money.

Also on offer over the weekend are WoodShed Workshops, tool and woodworking demonstrations, working mobile mills, chainsaw carving, historic woodcraft displays and more. Bring your trailer and take home a slab to craft your own unique coffee table or pick up a couple of rare timber rounds to work on your lathe.

While the Taste Maleny Produce Store offers gourmet goodies to take home, displays featuring sustainable choices for home and garden gives homeowners some options for creating a more ‘planet-friendly’ home. Local native plants from the Barung Nursery encourage visitors with even the smallest backyard to create fauna habitat.

There’s something for everyone!

And last but definitely not least, the foodies and entertainers are gearing up to keep the visitors fed and happy, making sure that everyone from kids to grandparents has a day to remember at the 2014 Maleny Wood Expo.

Now firmly set in the woodworking calendar, the Maleny Wood Expo provides a real alternative to the big city wood shows for craftspeople and lovers of all things wood.

The Maleny Wood Expo’s aim is to raise awareness about sustainable use of local rainforest timbers – if they’re to be available in the future, they must be protected now.

This strong ethical focus differentiates the Maleny Wood Expo from other wood shows - all work must be from sustainably harvested native, weed or recycled timbers.

The Maleny Wood Expo is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland’s Regional Development Program as part of a growing calendar of events throughout the state.
