This Months Featured Artists:

Maureen Canavan:

Maureen says “Art has always been a passion.  As a young teen, I was fortunate to be invited to join a group of painters on the banks of the Condamine River when an old hand painted ute pulled up and the occupant got out of his vehicle and set up his easel and began to paint our group of painters. I soon learnt that he was at that time, little known artist Hugh Sawrey. Our painting instructor for the day tried to tell Hugh that he would never get anywhere painting the way he did. Of course he went on to become a very talented and world famous artist. This was probably a major influence in my desire to follow my passion, so after bringing up our family of 6 children, many years of dressmaking, craft and quilting and full time position in the workforce I decided it was time to pursue my desire to paint. Although I have never had any formal lessons, I have been fortunate to attend some interesting and informative workshops over the past 3 years. Acrylics, pastels and graphite are possibly my most favored mediums but I also enjoy dabbling with water colours.”

Bruce Keats:

QLD born and bred, Bruce spent his working life in NSW as an industrial chemist and manager of a refractories plant until escaping into the world of insurance. Bruce says “Retirement became an easy choice following a heart attack and we relocated to the Sunshine Coast to provide support for one of our sons and his family.I have always been interested in crafts and working with my hands, and it was not long before I found somewhere to continue my wood turning and carpentry skills. The opportunity to learn Silversmithing was too good to miss as it gave me the ability to set the stones I cut and polish into handmade settings that I have designed. In my spare time I also do leatherwork (currently plaiting a stock whip), lead-lighting and wood carving. Unfortunately I had to leave my Maricat sailing boat behind when we moved to QLD.

As a member of the Buderim Craft Cottage, one of the biggest advantages is being able to associate and work with like minded people who are willing to share their expertise and knowledge.”
