Reading takes on a new dimension for Year 4 students of Conondale, Mapleton, Maleny and Montville State Schools at 9.30am on Friday, September 12 with the Gary Crew Hinterland Reader’s Cup presented by Maleny library branch of Sunshine Coast Council libraries.
Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay said the annual Gary Crew Hinterland Reader’s Cup promotes literacy and reading for life.
“This event culminates in an exciting final where school teams demonstrate their knowledge and comprehension of selected books,” Cr McKay said.
“The Cup has been running for approximately 10 years and the main partner is local prize winning author and academic, Gary Crew.
“Gary is Australia's most awarded author for children and young adults, having won the Children's Book Council Book of the Year four times - twice for his young adult novels and twice for his illustrated books.
“He has also won the National Children's Book Award, the NSW and Victorian Premiers' Awards, the Ned Kelly Award for crime fiction and twice been short listed for the Edgar Allan Poe Mystery Fiction Award in the USA.
“Gary and local community groups and businesses are involved in the event including Rosetta Books, The Hinterland Times, Maleny IGA, Maleny Co-Op, Maleny Additions, Maleny Friends of the library and The Range News.
“We are inviting parents and citizens to come along and cheer for their school, and join with Sunshine Coast Libraries as we champion reading.”
