Christmas in Cooroy

When it comes to the cream of the crop, Christmas in Cooroy is right up there in terms of festive season celebrations! 

 “The event is unique because everything is free including rides, face painting and the Santa visit.  But while those things are attractive to people it is the wealth of unique entertainment and the terrific community atmosphere that really gets people excited,” explained event manager Danielle Taylor.

The Bendigo Bank Street Parade is a big drawcard with around 30 floats decorated in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways.  This year the theme is “WILD WEST” and there are always lots of giveaways and lollies handed out into the crowds and people of all ages are just amazed at how great the floats look.

The Great Santa Race is a truly amazing spectacle with a crowd of Santa suit clad runners doing a roughly 300 metre sprint up the main street.  There is a prize pool of $1,850 sponsored by Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group and while entry is $10 to compete in this you get a free Santa suit to run in and all the proceeds go to the Leukaemia Foundation.  It is of course free to watch which is just as fun!

In late November the streets will get decorated and there will be a Shop Window Trail, which will give people the chance to vote for their favourite window and win a prize. Also, on 5 December the Butter Factory Art Centre will host the opening of the Guardian Pharmacy Photo Exhibition which will exhibit photos with the theme “Remember when…” between the 5 December and 3 January. Other highlights include the Poets Breakfast at the Cooroy Hotel, the East versus West Tug of War, local band Smokin Mirrors, the Hinterland Christian Centre Choir and a fantastic fireworks display sponsored by the Club Cooroy. New additions to the 2014 program are the “Guess the Weight of the Piglets competition” sponsored by Wythes Real Estate and the Santa Sack Race. Plus there will be market stalls, food stalls and even a bar sponsored by the Cooroy Hotel.
