In this demonstration, Garry Dolan will discuss the artistic process he used to create the watercolour works in the 'Of War and Peace' exhibition. Using only sepia and a disciplined sense of tone along with a strong but simple narrative can create a very moving image. He will step though the process to demonstrate how he chose to create this type of image.
Free. Bookings essential.
About Garry Dolan
After travelling to the WW1 battlefields of northern France over the winter of 2013/14 to trace the steps of my wife’s Great Uncle I have attempted to depict the experience of what it is like to visit these now sacred sites through my favoured communication medium - painting. While on this trip, I also took the time to research and trace the steps of one of my heroes, Arthur Streeton. The Australian War Memorial had said that they had very little information on where Streeton as an official War Artist painted his war art including some of his most iconic works. Armed with a copy of his diary and images of works he painted depicting his experiences, playing detective we successfully found and recorded nearly a dozen of these sites.
