SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast and F45 Training Caloundra are urging the local community to participate in the Cross the Oceans Team Turtle Challenge at the Caloundra Street Fair on Sunday 28th May. The aim of the initiative is to raise awareness and important funds to help protect endangered sea turtles around the world as part of a SEA LIFE Trust initiative.

A loggerhead turtle travels around 23,000 kilometres in the first 30 years of its life and the Cross the Oceans Team Turtle Challenge is a fun and interactive way for members of the public to unite together and collectively travel this distance via exercise between now and October.

The money raised will go towards the SEA LIFE Trust’s dedicated turtle projects, which to help protect turtles from threats in the wild including marine pollution and entanglement in discarded fishing nets. Monies raised will also go to the SEA LIFE Trust’s broader turtle rehabilitation efforts, to help conserve wild population numbers, ensuring the species’ survival for future generations.

Regan Taylor, SEA LIFE Trust’s Ambassador encourages locals of all fitness levels to head to the F45 Training stand at the Caloundra markets this Sunday (28 May) and get involved, “Loggerhead turtle hatchlings emerge from their nests in summer and head out to sea, 30 years and 23,000km later, the females return to the same beaches to lay their own eggs. To raise awareness of the endangered loggerheads, we’ve challenged ourselves to travel this distance and raise money to help protect turtles from the threats they face along their journey.

“Are you up for the challenge? We’d love to see as many Caloundra locals as possible head down to the markets on Sunday and put their best foot forward in helping ensure the survival of our local  turtles. Come down and check out the F45 Training stand and help us achieve our goal of clocking up 23,000km through exercise. It’s sure to be a fun and active day.”

Loggerhead turtles are listed as endangered animals and are ranked as a critical priority under the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. Major threats to turtles include plastic bags, foxes, wild cats and dogs, crab pots and light pollution.
